Hong Kong Mini Reunion February 24 - March 3 2010
Class of 1958 in ChinaReport by Had Talbot On February 24 th, 2010 some 85 members of the
great Class of 1958, plus about 80 spouses (including three widows) gathered in
Hong Kong for what must be one of the largest
"mini-reunions” in the history of our great University. The reunion was
substantially underwritten by our esteemed and enormously generous classmate
and Trustee, Sir Gordon Wu. Through Gordon’s eyes we all caught a glimpse of
the China – from Hong Kong
to Guangzhou to Macau
- of today that would be impossible in any other way.
We started and closed our week with sumptuous evenings at
the Panda Hotel in Hong Kong. We visited the
sights of Hong Kong (now a Special Administrative
Region of China) including the headquarters of Hopewell Holdings, the
construction and development company Gordon has led for many years. There we
benefited from an insider’s view of infrastructure projects, past and current,
that are changing the face of Guandong
Province, the wealthiest in China.
We then toured the province up to its capital Guangzhou
(previously known as Canton)
to view, up close and personal, a few of the projects themselves. We were
accompanied by Gordon Wu every step of the way. Throughout the tour he gave us
the benefit of candid and pithy comments about the generally positive and
pragmatic way in which the various Chinese authorities have worked with
contractors and the people of the region to achieve the astounding development
that has taken place over the last 30 years, since Deng Xiaoping declared that
"to be rich is glorious”.
The entire reunion was an unforgettable opportunity to join
with classmates and spouses to experience, "hands on”, the rapid evolution of a
historic and dynamic culture after years of stagnation and pain. Thank you, Sir
Gordon Wu!
