Dear Classmates:                                                                                        October 12, 2009

It was great seeing many of you at our 50th reunion.  When we mentioned a possible visit to Alaska, over a dozen couples were interested.  We later learned from Jim Farrin, chair of the Class of ‘58 Mini-Reunion Committee, that a survey of classmates showed a high level of interest in Alaska.   He spoke with his committee, and they endorsed Alaska as a destination for summer 2010.

As 40-year Alaskans, we volunteered to organize a several-day get-together that will include a briefing on this unique part of the world, an introduction to Alaska Native cultures and a day-long excursion that will include a tour by boat of Kenai Fjords National Park, the best way to see Alaska wildlife in a short period of time.  For those who want to continue traveling together, we recommend an extension to awesome Denali National Park.

If you’d like to join us, plan to be in Anchorage the day after solstice on the afternoon of Wednesday June 23, 2010 for a “Welcome to Alaska” Class of ’58 get-together.  The next morning, Cindy and I will host a half-day introduction and briefing on Alaska –a mixture of history, geography, and issues from climate and natural disasters to the economy and politics – followed by an afternoon visit to the world-class Alaska Native Heritage Center.

Friday, the 25th, we’ll head by motor coach to Seward for the Kenai Fjords tour.  If we’re lucky we’ll see everything from sea otters, puffins and bald eagles to bowhead whales.  Then, Saturday the 26th, those who want to travel together to see Denali National Park will be taken north for another 2 ½ days of seeing some of Alaska at its most spectacular.

While in Anchorage, you can stay at the Hotel Captain Cook, Alaska’s finest, at a special rate for the Class of ‘58, while other hotels and B&Bs for all budgets are available.

The estimated budget is attached.  Let me know if you are going to attend by February 28 and send me the reunion deposit of $150 per person by March 31 to confirm your booking.  Please indicate if you plan to participate only in the Anchorage/Kenai Fjords events or want to include the extension to Denali as well.

We look forward to facilitating a Class of ’58 mini-reunion next summer and introducing you to some of the best of Alaska.

Mal and Cindy

PS.  Hope to see you in Hong Kong!
