Welcome to theNEWPrinceton Class of 1958 Web Site! |
A Word from our Class President
Dear Classmates:
My third (I think) letter to you all, how time flies!!
Mini Reunions
Last June, 28 or 29 of us, including spouses had the pleasure of a wonderful trip on the Danube, provided by Viking River Cruises and the organizational skills of Jim Farrin and the travel agent he selected. It was truly comfortable, educational and wonderful to visit with classmates (with a total of 179 passengers, we of course were known as the "Princeton group" and asked a lots of questions about our dedication to mini reunions).
Somewhat surprisingly, we saw NO sign of any recession. Crowds were everywhere and many competing river cruise vessels were in evidence. Making reservations for time in the omnipresent locks on the Danube seems to be the major issue, so that more time is available to tour cities/towns along the way.
Jim Farrin and others have done a lot of planning for our mini reunions, to incorporate the desired trips you voted for in the poll we circulated in 2008 (for those who can remember that far back) Please think about joining your classmates on one or more of these events. Many classmates have finally begun to join others and have had great fun in doing so!!
In late September, many of us gathered in Massachusetts for the fall mini reunion steered by Jock Brooks. I am sure it was well organized, and hopefully the weather cooperated, so those from outside of New England had a chance to see the turning leaves.
Next spring, as most of you know, the Class will offer another trip, to South Africa, again thanks to VP Jim Farrin. You should have received a mailing from the University giving the details of this trip and list of the classmates who are planning to attend. On a cost/benefit basis, this appears to be a true bargain! We should also thank the Class of 1959 who made the recommendation to Jim.
Finally, from October 3-7, we will gather in Santa Fe. Among the activities planned will be a chance to see, perhaps participate in, the Santa Fe Balloon Festival, see the art stores and museums in Santa Fe, and visit one of Shelby Davis's World Colleges. (for those of us who did so in Hong Kong, you will agree with me that this is not to be missed).
Class Agent(s)
Lew Ross and Bill Duncan have done a wonderful job organizing our annual giving effort for the past 3 years. . Lew in particular has spent many hours calling his assistants, so to speak, and other classmates. I doubt any single classmate has spent so many hours on class activities! We owe them all a debt of gratitude for the effort, which seemingly is a 12 month a year duty.
Partly at the suggestion of the University, and following the lead of other classes, we are hoping to add a third classmate to the masthead of this effort. Lew and/or Bill can describe the duties far better than I; if any one of you is willing to at least learn what this involves, please contact one of them or give me a call. Thanks!
As always, please also remember our need for Class Dues. With this letter, you will receive a dues card and return envelope to our Treasurer, Ted Bromley, who we also owe a heartfelt thank you for many years of service. I have been informed that only 50% of our classmates pay this modest fee, which is used ( as you know) for our class gatherings and University dues. Please consider your participation this year.
Bridge Year Program
I was very impressed by a presentation given by Pres Shirley here in Seattle almost a year ago on the Bridge Year program, which offers admitted freshman the chance to go abroad for a year, thus putting off their matriculation for a year.
At the present time, the cost for the 20+ students annually is borne by Annual Giving.
In talking to the staff at the University, they are hopeful that in years to come gifts to essentially an endowment fund to support this program will pick up the cost. I would welcome any thoughts, perhaps on the forum section of our web site, on your reaction to our class doing something in an organized way to support this program.
Using the web site
As most of you know, Bruce Krause has done a great deal of work on our web site, in reorganizing it and providing updates for all of us. Please take a few minutes now and then, between naps, to consider using the Forum Section of the web site and give us a picture of you and/or your bride, children and/or grandchildren. Don't forget to look for local Princeton events: alumni.princeton.edu. Thank you Bruce, for all your efforts, with our web site. .
University events
There are the usual two big football games/ gatherings, Yale and Harvard, as always, with the Yale game at home on November 12 on Alumni Day. There will also be a tent at Cambridge for the Harvard game.
On February 25, 2012, the University will have the Service of Remembrance at the University Chapel and finally, next year's Reunions will be May 31-June 3 ( our 54th).
In closing, I once again would like to thank Jim Farrin in particular for all his efforts. As most of you know, he will Chair the 55th Reunion and given his organizational skills in setting up our mini reunions
over the past three years, I am sure that it will be organized better than any other reunion!! Please contact him directly with ideas and if you wish to volunteer, please do so! Please communicate if you have thoughts, concerns or issues. Go to our website now!!
Best,
Leonard

BERKSHIRE MINI REUNION 2011

Jock and Jytte Brooks were guides and hosts extraordinaire for the class's four-day mini-reunion in the Berkshires in late September. Jock is a former director of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, and we were privileged to have him give us a tutorial on some of its distinctive treasures as well as an insider's look at a selection of Winslow Homer's etchings, drawings and watercolors. The program also featured trips to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), the Norman Rockwell Museum, and visits to a contemporary artist's studio and to several historic and modern dwellings. Additional options included, for those seeking a more physical outlet, nature hikes and bike rides, and in intimate conversation with a former Williams College president. One evening, the Brooks hosted the attendees for cocktails at their home not far from the Clark. Not to be outshone in the hospitality department, Lee Elman brought the entire group together at his hilltop home overlooking the Southwestern Massachusetts mountains for drinks and a sit-down dinner on get-away night, which ended with a robust rendition of "Old Nassau." Attendees, including classmates, spouses, special others, and associates, numbered 67
